Bangkok, at your own pace

Bangkok at the start or end of your Thailand trip

Bangkok can be a place to settle after arriving in Thailand, or to rest at the end of the trip. You might want a meal out, some time in the city or simply a comfortable place to stay in after travelling. Start with what you would like from the pause, then match the dates and flights around it.

What would the Bangkok stop give you?

A meal together, time to unpack and a place to rest can each be a reason to add Bangkok to the trip. You may want to see the city, or you may have travelled enough and prefer to spend the last part at home. With children or several people travelling together, weigh those benefits alongside the extra packing and journeys. Choose the dates around the kind of stay you want.

Count the time you can actually use

With an afternoon arrival and a departure the next morning, one night can give you an evening and time to rest. Two nights may leave a full day, while a longer stay can give you more room for time at home or in the city. Put flight times, the airport journey and accommodation access on the same plan. An early landing, late arrival or early departure will change the hours you can actually use. Check those times before choosing your dates.

Put Bangkok first for a slower beginning

Choose the beginning when you would like to settle after the flight before moving on to Phuket, Chiang Mai or another part of Thailand. Leave the arrival day light, with a meal and time at home. Make any outing fit how everyone feels. Think through the onward journey as well, including the airport or station, the bags you will carry and the time you need to leave the home.

End the trip with time at home

After days of moving between places, the last part of a trip can be for staying in. A slow morning, a simple meal and time together in the living room can be enough. Read, rest and leave space to sort the bags at your own pace. You can enjoy this part without planning another outing. Match the final day’s plans to check-out and the journey for your flight home.

If you feel like going out

If you have a free day and would like to go out, choose one main outing after breakfast. Around Punnawithi, a meal and time in the park at Cloud 11 can give the day a focus. Around Ekkamai, coffee or a meal in the neighbourhood leaves room for an afternoon at home. If shopping is the reason for your Bangkok stop, choose one of the EM District centres instead. The guides below help you choose a place, then leave the rest of the day open for a pause or a change of plan.

Choose the neighbourhood and the layout together

Compare the area with the places you expect to visit, then look at the actual home. Bedrooms, shared living space and stairs matter as much as the neighbourhood name, especially with children, several bags or different sleeping routines. Include the journey from the home to your transport connection. For the airport leg, check whether each flight uses Suvarnabhumi (BKK) or Don Mueang (DMK). They are separate airports, and your arrival and departure may use different ones.

Useful questions

Should I stay in Bangkok before Phuket or Chiang Mai, or before flying home?

Put Bangkok first if time to settle would help your onward trip. Leave it until the end if you would like to rest, stay in or repack after travelling. Compare the flight times, extra journeys and what everyone would like from this part of the trip.

How long should a short Bangkok stay be?

One night can be useful for rest between journeys. Two nights may give you a full day, while a longer stay can leave more time at home or in the city. Match the dates to your plans, flight times and accommodation access. Check the requirements and availability for your chosen dates.

What if my flight arrives early or leaves late?

Check-in is from 15:00 and check-out is by 11:00, Bangkok time. Let us know your flight times and plans for your bags before booking, so we can discuss what may be possible. Any different arrangement needs our confirmation.

Does a flight to Bangkok always use the same airport?

Check the airport code on each flight. Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK) are separate airports. Plan the journey for the airport on your own booking and use current operator information for transport.
